AACCKKK you're nuts!!!
I dont envy anyone brave enough to reseal an old tank, I tried it on a wee 10g and would rather shoot my big toe then try it again!!!!
  :hyper:

This is one of those tanks that is worth the trouble. It's around 50 years old, 5 feet long with a slate bottom & chrome frame. Empty it weighs a good 200 pounds. Came with a stainless steel hood, & an angle iron stand. Needs some tlc, but it should look pretty cool once it's done.

Oooo, that does sound like a nice tank Tolak!

As far as the oscars go, I'd rehome them or give them back to the pet store ASAP, and give that employee who gave you bad advice a piece of my mind, too! What a tool, I'm sure he/she just wanted to make a sale. With an ammonia reading like that your tank either isn't cycled or there's too much of a bioload for your filter to deal with, so I'd be doing large (40%) water changes on a daily basis until things are under control.

watch out w/ those marbles oscars are a very smart fish and will start playing with those and may eventualy break the glass in the tank. they try to get your attention by spitting them at the glass. also go back to the retailer thet sold you those and kick them in the shin. i am a retailer of fish and always warn my customers about oscars to the point that i will refuse the sale and have gotten introuble with my bosses. I have maintained an adolesent (under 10 inches) oscar in a thirty gallon untill i sold it but i hade to do a water change daily about five gallons a day good luck either a new big tank or giving them away
