Sick Fish

OK, thanks and what about a water change, is that likely to help. We have noticed one of the zebra danios is red, looks like internal bleeding and a few other fish are flicking and some have started losing fins

the antibacterial meds need time to kill off the bad bacteria which is why they say not to do a water change, the best you can really do is to follow the course of the meds and hope for the best. I'm really sorry to hear it's not going well.

Thankyou. I have been fishkeeping for 4 years now and have never had any problems with infections. I upgrade to a bigger tank and just coz i get a bit greedy and add some more fish i end up with all my fish dying off. If they all die im going to give up the hobby, its too heart breaking

I understand how you feel, my big die off happened when I was upgrading tanks and added some new fish. If you do decide to stay in the hobby I highly recommend quarantining all future purchases for at least 4 weeks.

yeah ive just sent my husband out to get a 3ft tank that we can have as a quarantine tank for any new purchases. I was planning on keeping zebra danios in there to keep it ticking over in between.

Septicemia very hard to cure once it progresses.

Have the fish been flicking since adding the methylene blue.

We have just completed the treatment for the bacterial infection but today i have noticed something else. The bala sharks have got a white coating over the top of them, they are now spinning around and really not looking good, is this likely to be the bacteria or something else. My husband treated for white spot because he thought it was that but it doesnt look like the pictures of white spot. The white stuff is fluffy and all clumped together. Cant find any pictures on internet of what it looks like and cant take a good enough picture because the treatment has turned the water green. Anyone have any ideas what it might be now

Sounds like it could be columnaris.
Any excess mucas.

Columnaris (a.k.a. Mouth Fungus)

Symptoms:

An infected fish will have off-white to gray cotton-like patches on the head, fins, gills, body and particularly the mouth. In time, these areas will develop into open sores. Gill swelling may occur, gill filaments may stick together and excessive mucus may develop in the gill area. Rapid breathing can be seen. Fins may deteriorate to the point of leaving the fin rays bare. Muscles may be inflamed and capillaries may rupture. Fish, particularly livebearers, may exhibit "shimmying". Infection may be acute (killing an infected fish within hours), or chronic (lingering for several days before eventually killing the fish). As with most diseases, not all symptoms need be present.

Cause:

The bacterium Flexibacter columnaris.

Treatment:

Ensure that your water conditions (e.g., Ammonia, Nitrite, pH, Nitrate levels, and water temp.) are within their proper ranges. If not, perform a water change and/or treat the water accordingly. Recommended medications include: Furanace, Fungus Eliminator, Fungus Cure, Furacyn, Furan-2, Triple Sulfa, E.M. Tablets, Tetracycline, or Potassium Permanganate. Medicated foods are also recommended. Columnaris can be highly infectious and may quickly kill all aquarium inhabitants; therefore, early treatment is essential. All fish, including those not yet showing visible symptoms, as well as the aquarium they inhabit should be treated.

few weeks old, but how was progress on this.

Thanks guys for all your help, we lost alot of fish, nearly all of them. Once all signs of infection had gone we bought some new fish. It has been a few weeks on and now i have noticed loads of white spots on on of our golden severums. It started on her fins and now it is on her body, she has also started hiding. I havent noticed it on any of the other fish. I have started treatment with protozin, lets hope that works. Im quickly going off the idea of fishkeeping, its so heartbreaking when loads die you think you are over it and something else goes wrong. We constantly check water conditions and they are always amonia 0, nitrite 0 and nitrate 10, just dont understand why we keep getting infections.

R.I.P.

It best to buy a hospital tank so you can issolate new fish for up to 4 weeks. This way its stop desease going into the main tank and killing your other fish.

yeah we have got a quarantine tank now, just had to wait for it to cycle. We were just a bit impatient. We had a 700l tank with only a couple of fish in it.

Anyway does anyone know if protozin works, we also have esha white spot treatment. Does anyone know if we can use aquarium salt with the treatments.

The waterlife med fine for whitespot.
If a fish has a bacterial infection aswell best to use esha exit and esha 2000.
I wouldn't bother with the salt as not all fish tolerate it towell.

Oh dear, i didnt think anyone was going to reply and couldnt stand seeing them poorly anymore so treated with salt, only half dosed the tank though if that helps. I have some esha exit. Im supposed to treat the tank with protozin on days 1,2,3 and 6 and so far i have only done day 1 so should i not treat tomorrow and do the esha exit instead.

Oh and im not sure if it is internal bacteria this time as no fish are dying - Yet. They are just rubbing against stones and some have white specks on them

What fish do you have in the tank.

Carry on with the protozin.
You can use the esha exit now without doing a water change and running some black carbon for 2 days.
