Sick Cory

My cory has a problem with her eye. I just finished a 5 day treatment with maracyn and maracyn 2. I don't think it did much for her...
I thought it a bacterial infection. Now I see it is a bubble right beside her eye.
What is this and how do I treat it?

I have only had her a week. She is in the qt tank with 2 other corys and 4 loaches. The others are fine. They are coming out today so I can concentrate on getting her better.

What do I do for her?

I forgot the basics...
temp... 74f
amonia...0
nitrites... 0
nitrates... 6
There is sand on bottom
a coconut cave and 2 tiny pot caves
and some plants for cover.
It is 10g with whisper 5/15 filter plus a bubble bar running in it.

Her eye just looked a little hazy when I got her... then it got worse...
I didn't notice her eye until I was already home with her.

She is eating and acting fine. The only thing is that she don't play in the bubbles like the others.

What is that?

Is there anything inside the bubble that you can see.
How long did you use the maracyn for.
Any red sores on the cory on streaking.
What do the barbels looks like.

Everything looks fine except the eye as far as I can tell.
Yesterday was the 5th day with the maracyn. (both kinds) I did it just like the directions said.
I am going to do their water change in just a little bit.

I will try to get a better look when I do the water change. If I see anything else I will add it. So far I have not seen anything besides the eye problem.

Edit: I can't see anything in the bubble. It just looks white...

To be honest not sure.
Bubbles like the cory has can be a number of things from to much aeration, bacterial to parasite.
Not inprovement at all with the maracyn.
Does jollysue know as she excellent with corys.

Jollysue was the one that said to do the maracyn. It looked like the whole eye was white at first. We didn't see the bubble at first. Now you can see the eye and the bubble after doing the maracyn treatments. I showed her the new pics and she was unsure. She did tell me before that it may take going through the treatments twice...
I don't know what could have started it because it was started before I got it...

I would carry on with the maracyn abit longer.

I scanned for articles on the net and I found a number of references to bubble in the eye. The consensus was that it's probably due to a combination of high oxygen content, high water temperature and stress due to handling.

You stated that you just got the fish. Is it possible that where you purchased them from just recently received the fish themselves and that fish were in bags filled with pure oxygen? That would definitely explain it.

I also found a post where it was caused by nematode infections which were eliminated with several antihelmitic baths.

No idea if this helps but since it's happened to a Cory, I'm very interested (I wonder why?).

I have decided since I can't figure out what caused it... I am going to treat again with the maracyn combo, and add something for pests...
Then I am going to do a fungus attack. That should cover everything. If I can't figure it out... I will just treat everything until I hit something that works.
I just don't understand it just being one of them... if it were the conditions.

I would complete the 2 rounds of Maracyn and Maracyn II. Then I would give it a rest. Keep clean water and forgo extra air bubbles. Let the little girl rest and see if it resolves itself. CoryDad may be correct. I also would do a google to see if I could find anything resembling the symptom.

I also would not count out Bryan's advice. His has been as good as any ime with Corys.

See how she looks at the end of the second round. Maybe keep her at low light and temp, although juliis are recommended at 74-79 F, keep her at the low end.

Consider some antibiotic food, although my fish never eat it, so I can't use it. My fish are too spoiled to eat the stuff. Maybe if you can find a way to smash it and soak it in something appitizing for her.

You can see the eye with pop eye, btw.

I got 4 more julii and 2 more striata... Now another julii today is showing the same symptoms.
It is looking like pop eye now...
I couldn't get my hands on more of the maracyn meds. The only thing they had was E.M. Erythromycin and T.C. Tetracycline. I got both and came home to research... Everything I found said tetracycline... So I just added that.

Now the problem is that I think the last round killed my cycle... I am getting spikes. I need to do water changes about twice a day, but the meds say only 25% every 2 days.... How do I handle this?

Also apparently the problem may be in my tank... I checked the new fish... they all looked healthy. I did add a bag buddy tab to the water for transport because it is over an hour one way to the pet shop. Could that be causing this?
The eye blister/bubble is showing up the day after I get them into my tank...
I had one from a group of three in the first batch get it, and One from the second batch that I know has it. The other 3 are hiding... I don't know about them yet...

This is getting rediculous! What do I need to do?

I can't find my amonia test...

I know there is amonia though... My nitrites tested .7 and nitrates tested 30.
I just added a dose of prime... I can't do a water change. I just added the tetracycline.
I don't know what else to do...
I saw 2 without pop eye yet. That leaves one more that may or may not have it...
I am now panicing...
I am thinking of setting up another tank to cut the load on this little qt tank. It is a 10g with 5 tiny corys and 2 med size loaches. Is that too much... it looks to be (actual sizes) about 9 inches of fish. I thought it was ok for a couple of weeks, but maybe not...

What should I do?

For most any med I do a 50% water change, and remed daily. There are very few meds this does not apply to, the ones you are using are not on the list. By doing a large daily water change you are negating any cycling problems, while keeping water immaculate, which is needed for a bacterial situation. This will also help with the overstocking of that 10 gallon.

Certain antibiotics target infections in different ways, and there are plenty out there beyond Maracyn/Maracyn II. When in doubt, do what I do, call the National Fish Pharmacy help line; 520-298-7814.

I will call them and see what they say... I do have a few other meds, but didn't know which to use. Everything I found said tetracycline... so I used that.
