I have an Angel fish that has not eaten for about 2 weeks. He was in good shape before, so he does not seem that stressed
He stopped eating about 2 weeks ago and was still moving around, and responsive. I finally got a med tank last Sunday, and raised the temp slowly to about 88 F
On Monday, I started treating the tank with Maracyn 2 and today will be the last of the 5 day treatment. I also fed him yesterday for the first time. I put a flake in and he ate it, but then eventually spit it out. I got rid of the remnants. I then tried some frozen blood worms, and he ate 2 of them aggressively, and the 3rd one was spit out.

So now, today is the last day of treatment with the Maracyn 2.

What else can I do. Is adding aquariums salt a good idea also. Can Angels tolerate it

I would eventually ike to lower the temp slowly if he continues to eat. I really want to get him healthy and back to the main tank

Any suggestions on what else I can try

I have not seen him poo in a while...as he has not eaten
I also notice his bum looks like its open and a little red...its like the anus is permanently opened a bit

The Maracyn is good if it's a bacterial problem but it may be a parasite (in fact quite likely) and Maracyn won't do anything for that. see how he continues to respond to the Maracyn and if at the end of that teatment if he's not improved then treat for internal parasites. Remove any Maracyn before the new treatment with water change and/or carbon.

Will adding aquarium salt help?

Any ideas about what a good medication for a parasite may be

Any and all help appreciated

I don't think the salt is necessary.

For an anti parasitic you want something with either praziquantel or flubendazole in it. I can't recommend a specific product as I'm UK based.

Thanks for that

I have also read raising the temp can help

I have it at about 89 F right now....any thoughts on that

A raised temperature is ok as it will speed up his metabolism and strengthen his immune system. Only keep it at that for the duration of the medication though and lower it gradually at the end.

Tetra Parasite Guard and API General Cure would fit the bill. The Parasite Guard contains praziquantel, diflubenzuron, metronidazole and acriflavine. General Cure contains praziquantel and metronidazole. The Parasite Guard is usually cheaper.

afremont do you know if there is one available there that doesn't contain metronidazole. The problem is that metronidazole causes permanent organ damage and it's cumulative. So it will do no (obvious) harm on first use but if it needs to be used again in the future it can do more harm than good.

I hadn't read that anywhere, thanks for the heads up on it. There are medicated foods that contain praziquantel that I know of. I've got some small pellets and the fish absolutely hate them, but they eat them in the end. NLS makes a non-medicated (garlic) anti-parasitic fish food.

I found this on the metronidazole:

I think I have found out what my Angel has...after much researching and observing, I think it has Nematode Worms
I saw a picture of an Angel with an open anus and some thin little things sticking out. I took a magnifying glass and looked at my Angel and that is exactly what I see.

I read else where that the only thing that can cure them is Lemavisole
I have also read that "Anti-worm medication developed for aquariums are usually affective against nematode worms"

So now I am more confused and concerned. I hope this infection did not spread to my tank, and now I need to know if any anti worm medication does work on these, or do I have to try and track down some Lemavisole

Accepting any and all advise

I don't think you are going to find it anywhere, as fish medicine anyway. You could perhaps get it from a farm co-op store by asking for a pig dewormer. There is some issue about the manufacturer stopping making it and a new manufacturer is still under FDA review so they can't sell it yet. Clout is another anti-parasite med that should be able to kill the worms, but I understand that it's pretty harsh as well. I've never used it.

Hmmm

What do I do with my poor angel
He ate a bit again

I also read that Hikari Prazipro is used to kill these worms

Anyone ever try them

I am running out of options

Prazipro would be a praziquantel based med. Jungle makes some medicated food that contains praziquantel that I have used:

I see that they claim that it contains levamisole and metronidazole as well as praziquantel. This is only for internal parasites. For external parasites (gill flukes) you will need some of the meds in the water as well.
