Went down lfs today, spent some time looking at the different shrimp they had in there. Some were samll and others were monsters.
Can some one tell me the better sort/s for genereal community tanks? please :)

rule of thumb, if it has claws/pincers then it is not suitable for comunities.
all others will be fine, although if it can fit in a fishes mouth it will proberbly end up as food.

Hi I've got 6 amano shrimps in my community tank (plattys, neons, peppered corries. rummynose, black tetras, danios, and rasboros) the fish don't bother them and they don't bother the fish, they are amusing little things. They may hide for the first few days till they get use to the tank but mine are out most of the time now and I love watching them, especially when I put cucumber in. :)

Depends what your setup is. What size tank / what are your fish ? Is it planted with real plants or plastic ?

Ghost shrimp are great for the tank. They are good little scavengers, won't bother your other fish, and they add an interesting dynamic to the tank.

Algae shrimp are a step up from ghost shrimp, becuase they eat algae as well. They are a wise addition to a planted tank.
