I have a 100 ish liter tank for shrimp only.
I have been using an old air operated filter and an airstone to keep it clean and the water circulating.
It works well but the bubbling noise can be annoying,I want to breed shrimp in the tank(there are about 50 shrimp in it at the moment)
I was thinking of getting a small internal filter but am worried about it sucking any baby shrimplets into it.
Do i neeed a filter for a 100 litre tank or can i get away with a smaller one, there will only ever be shrimp in this tank.
Was thinking of a fluval U2.I could probably use an external filter like a fluval 105 but they are a bit more expensive.
How can i make it baby shrimp proof.Could i wrap it with foam or tights to make the inlet holes smaller or would this reduce the flow to much

Netting the filter intake would work i reckon. Tights or something similar would work well imo.

I've never bothered to keep shrimp out of my filters. They do fine in my internals and canisters. When I clean them I just toss them back in the tank. Only place where it would be an issue is with an HOB since the impeller is the first thing.

Ok thanks

Just been looking and i think i will get a Fluval U2 and wrap something around the inlet, just some foam or tights

One of my crytal reds has eggs. :good:

Thanks

I have brought an Eheim biopower 160

Seems to be what i need, will fit a piece of stocking over the bottom inlet.

Is it better to use the spray bar or jet or jet with air.

I can alter the flow to suit as its adjustable.

will run it in my tank with the air filter until it is fully working and has a good bacteria.

Not sure how much waste 50 shrimp produce.

Eheim Biopower 160 filter arrived today.

Fitted this evening,Very nice and well made.Very quiet.

Have had to turn the flow down,to about half way.I am using the spray bar and it gives excellent circulation.

Stretched a sock over the intake.

Will leave the air operated foam filter in there for a while until the bacteria grow in the Eheim.

Ohh another CRS keeper :)

Can I ask what your water parameters are? Mine are only babies at the moment, but the hope is to breed them eventually.

Ammonia and Nitrite both 0
Ph is 7.5
Nitrate between 0 an 5ppm.25% weekly water changes

gh 180 and kh 40,These are test strips so not sure how accurate they are.

The female Crystal black has had no eggs for a couple of days,Tonight i have noticed very small 2mm ish shrimplets in the moss :good:

This is the best picture i could get

You can see one of shrimplets, just up and to the right of the Red cherry shrimp.Sat on the leaf

Ive heard that the best for shrimp breeding is the air line filter. The increase oxygen in the tank increases the survival of baby shrimps as threre is more oxygen for them.
