Shrimp Rescue

this weekend will be 'rescue of the thousand shrimp living in my external filter' it is an aqua one aquis 750. any tips on how to do this fast and cleanly without wrecking the bacteria in my filter. the actual tank (90L) also needs a total rescape (new substrate and replanting) should i leave this for next weekend? do you think it will be too much on the tank and fish to do it all in one? or for me for that matter

I'd do it all in one. As long as you don't scrub your filter media out too much, or under the tap, or let it dry out, your bacteria will be fine; they grip onto the media quite strongly.

ok, thanks for the reassurance! will postpone until my 2 and a half year old is at his nans and go for it. have written a detailed plan (other half will groan) i think i have way too many shrimp. is that possible to have 'pest shrimp' i may need to give some away

Well, the good news is that the bioload of shrimp is very small, so you'd need to have an awful lot to affect your water quality.

I know cherry shrimp can breed out of control; is that what you have? They are very popular, so you might be able to find an LFS to take some from you.

yes indeed they are, gangs of them were wrestling some cucumber away from my pleco the other day. my two lfs take back anything so i'll prob be able to bag them a hundred or so!

i wouldnt sell them, is effort... would just give them away if someone wants to collect. will see how many i get first.
