I've been inspired by JL94x4's recent post about changing his substrate about 1,000 times :p

Would any of you be willing to post pictures of your substrate and tell us what it is and maybe why you've chosen it? I've got a fine black gravel at the moment which I honestly do love the look of but when I see my corys scurrying along the bottom I am really tempted to change to sand but am put off by the upheaval and also, I'm not sure what I want! I'll start by posting a picture of mine. As I said I chose it because I love the look and I chose a very small size because I thought it would be a bit nicer for the corys which it is probably nicer than the big stuff but it's still not sand!

Close up-ish (pardon the menacing glare...)

I started with ordinary black gravel in all mine
I changed to playsand, & while I like the colour, I don't like the dark patches it develops.
I've changed 2 of mine to fine black gravel, the tanks with my corys will stay with sand for now.

Sorry for the poor quality, I only have an iPad to take pics from

Playsand from argos for me, I will try black eventually, price puts me off though (argos 15kg = £2.99)

I will be mixing in some gravel too though, as I find it more natural mixed

Caribsea Tahitian Moon Black Sand. Wishing I bought a black substrate for the plants instead. But I started with ugly river rock gravel.

Oooh now see I like the look of that tahitian moon black sand - how do you find it?

ianho - is that more like a soil then?

Thanks for the photos guys, keep em coming!

I found it at Petsmart, but you might be able to get it online. I really love the grain size and texture, and it's heavier then playsand. Just a little overpriced though, when doing a big tank.
