Shouldn't my GSP eat the snail shells?

We just got a GSP for my daughter's tank. He sucks the snail from it's shell and lets the shell drop to the bottom of the tank. Doesn't he need the crunchy shell to trim his 'teeth'? These are tiny pond snails, I have seen his mouth open much wider than these shells.

Oh yes silly me :*) Try bigger snails so he has to work harder to get at them. Another thing worth trying is cockles in their shells (should be available from lfs frozen food section) or mussels in their shells.
