Should I work part-time in my lfs? I am old enough for a part-time job and my parents said that I could work there every fortnight. Does it sound like a good idea? I mean there are many people working there and I have noticed that a few people work there for around 2 weeks and leave  So everytime I go to the lfs there is always new people working there.

It's actually quite a good lfs, very large and always busy... sometimes there are even enough assistants to help out everyone (like today).

I know the last question that will come will be will the manager allow me to work there... but I just want to know if it's a good idea first. Not too much hassel or anything.

Some hints will also be nice from anyone who has worked in a lfs before ;)

The lfs is called "Vebas Aquariums" :)

I think that's a fine idea, Guppylover. I've heard they always look for people with a good attitude and knowledge in this area. And being female, I'm sure you'd go down a treat, because most LFSs near me, for some strange reason, always seem to have men (or is it (cow)boys manning their sections?!) :p

I think its telling me somthing if people are leaving all the time.
A high turn over of staff means very un happy staff, they might be nice to your face but maybe not nice to work for, why not ask one of the guys who left and ask them how is was working there.

I don't think they leave because of the work conditions or anything like that. I mean I've met the manager/store owner before and he seemed very nice. Anyway it's almost always that the younger store assistants that leave, around the ages of 14-17 years old. They seem to change a lot but I still see some of the same older assistants.

I don't know why they would leave though... I mean everyone seems quite friendly and everything. Mabye they just get bored... or something around that.

I'll ask about the changing staff members... just to be sure :)

Sounds like you should go for it. Would they employ you on a once a fortnight basis? The least you can work here is weekly....i.e a saturday job. Just curious.Good luck to you.

I worked at my lfs when I was 16. One thing I will say is ... you'll never want to clean another tank as long as you live!

go for it, the worst that can happen is you don't like it and you quit!

I'ved asked my LFS dude if he wants a lil helper but he said he didn't have enough work for another guy which is true!!

I've worked at my lfs b4 didn't last long enough but it was very gd i learnd soo much from them. it's better than a book or the years of fish keeping. u get to see the inside of the business part of it. and well if u go there regularly then they know u know where things are and that u have the expriance.

GO GET THAT JOB!

I can tell u u'll work a lot more wen u get started.

Good experience for you, even if you don't stay very long yourself. You will see the other side of the fence. People on this forum always complaining about LFS employees, you could probably start your own forum for LFS employees to complain about customers. You will definitely learn a lot about this hobby (which you love  ), they may let you get first dibs on any new fish, possibly an employee discount too!!! :hyper: :hyper:

Yeah, you should take the job at the fish store. I know I would, but I'd take any available job that deals with household pets, especially tropical fish!
Just imagine how much more discounts you can get. Maybe even Free! I think I should ask my lfs if there are any open positions... :)

I definatley think you should try and get this job.

Don't worry about people leaving, many won't have the love for these animals that you do and just want an easy way to get cash, when they realise it's not easy they quit. Some may leave due to working conditions being bad, you wont know unless you experience it, some may leave because they get too upset dealing with dead and dying animals.

Get the job for all these reasons not in order of importance:

1) Cash of your own (this is better than pocket money).
2) Experiencing working life, will help you when you leave school to get a "real" job.
3) Staff discounts and exclusive access to stock.
4) Your own knowledge will increase massively.
5) You can help prevent newbies making mistakes.
6) You can make sure the fish in your shop are the best kept fish in the area.

All the possible downsides of working there can be soved in one way, leave.

Go for it
