Hi All,

Last weekend my Amano shrimp (about 2" in length) decided to climb out of my closed tank and jump 9ft across my living room from our 3ft high tank. I found him in the morning when I came downstairs looking a bit dry and crispy.

At first I though he was dead until I saw his legs twitching, so I quickly rushed him back into the tank where he promptly swam off and I could see him pushing air bubbles out of his body!.

Since then he has spent almost the entire week hiding up near my filter. You can prod him with the net and he doesn't really take much notice. The only time he has moved is when I did a water change and the water level fell below where he was hiding.

He's clearly not very happy and all of the little feathery bits on his feeding 'legs' have closed up .

Should I put him down? If so, how :(

Could he be close to having another moult? That and the shock of almost dying could have really put the sulks on him. Do you know if it has been feeding at all or just hiding nonstop? To tell if its been feeding look along its back and if the shell isn't dark or pigmented you should be able to see a thin black strip. That strip is the shrimps poo line (the same one they remove when prawns are cooked). If you can see the strip and its black then the shrimp is at least feeding on something.

I'd give it some time to recover. And quit prodding it. If it is trying to molt, disturbing it can harm or kill it.

He stayed hidden for a few more weeks, but he seems to be recovering now.
Weirdly he's gone an orange colour too:

I'm 100% sure that this isn't an amano shrimp....it's a bamboo shrimp
