Not sure about leaving the media dirty but I would think it wont matter as if your doing fishless (please do) the pure ammonia will give the filter bacteria more than enough to feed on. But with the snails Ive just started cycling and after planting ive got small snails in there which im guessing came off the plants but ive just left them in there for now at a guess they will help add some thing to help the cycle but again the bottled ammonia will be doing the work.

Its your own call but be aware that snails multipy very rapidly sometimes and many come to think of them as an eyesore to the look of their tank eventually, so be aware that you have more leverage over the population if you start taking measures (out the door, not in indoor trash or they'll crawl out!) early on!

Ammonia is found in mop&broom sections of hardware, grocery, bigbox, whatever type stores. It can be an adventure finding the right stuff. Don't necessarily believe a clerk who says they don't have it. It must not have dyes, fragrances (it stinks enough by itself(!) and is even dangerous to sniff too much!) and must not have surfactants or soaps. When you shake it the bubbles should only last 2 or 3 seconds as if it were water. It should not foam.

Here Here, i started off with two. Now i have close to 50. in just 3 weeks. Imagine what 20 will look like in 3 weeks.

hi - I used to have a big tank for 4ish years but got rid of it a few months back but I have a new small tank at the moment - like waterdrop said bottled ammonia is from homeware shops if your in the UK homebase ammonia is the most commonly used one think its about £1.99 for a big bottle if you go to the aquarium calculator at the top you will be able to work out how much to add this will start your filter and set off a bacteria colony going I use API test bottles to monitor how my ammonia is working through and also nitrite think a master test kit is £20 and it will last you for a long time there are guides on this site (best ive found as well ) that can walk you though it and others here are fantastic as well :)

Snails don't really help or hurt *anything*, other than perhaps be entertaining a bit after they are big. By far the most common feeling among aquarists is that they are a pest that take over the tank and can be difficult to get rid of. Only some species do that though and there are others that are sold for their looks and dont' have lots of offspring like the more common ones do.
