Should I Divide My Tank?

Hey everyone,

I'm just wondering if I should get a divider and split my 10 gallon tank in half. Currently I have my female betta (Rainbow), my female African Dwarf Frog (Ginger) and my mystery snail (Atlas) in there, but Atlas will be moving to my 5 gallon as soon as it is done cycling. The reason I'm thinking of splitting the tank is while my betta and frog normally get along fine, when feeding time comes around Ginger gets into "hunting mode" and lunges at just about anything that gets in her face, which usually ends up being Rainbow (I don't think it's aggression, just Ginger trying to find food). Since Rainbow is faster she usually swims away with no problems but a few days ago Ginger nipped a small piece of Rainbow's pelvic fin.

If I were to split it, I would get a vented divider so water flow wouldn't be obstructed and I might get 1 or 2 more frogs to be with Ginger (either way). But I don't know, what do you guys think? Would you split them up, or keep them together?

Edit: I suppose another 2 options could be getting more plants to (hopefully) keep them all more separated, or to take Rainbow out during feeding time (she is really easy to get out with a cup).

Thanks

If you can't have separate tanks for them then I think it'd be good to divide it. Perhaps try planting it more first though to see if that helps.
Or taking your betta out during feeding time could be fine too, this would also mean your betta isn't getting the frog's food and getting overfed :)

You could also put the betta in the five gallon when it is done cycling and put the rest of your fish in the ten gallon. Shrimps and snails and a frog would all be more comfortable together and a betta and a frog in a ten gallon where you would have more issues with feeding.

Thanks for your input Mariah!

Really? I was concerned with my frog(s) trying to eat the shrimp/snails.

Also worth mentioning, I technically have one more tank I could set up, it's teeny, only 2 maybe 2.5 gallons. I could cycle that and just keep my snails (1 mystery snail and who knows how many pond snails) in that. Move the frog(s) to the 5 gallon and keep Rainbow in the 10 (I'd rather keep her in the 10 just because she was the original inhabitant)? That is the least desirable plan, just because I already have 2 tanks and a bearded dragon set up in my room, but if that would work best then I could do that.

Again let me know what you think.

I didn't think about the frog eating the shrimp. You very well might lose any shrimps you purchase. We already know that your betta has attacked invert tankmates, so adding the shrimp and snails to her tank while keeping the frog in the five gallon wouldn't work. Your best bet, I suppose, would be to remove the betta for feeding. This is one of the reasons why keeping these two species together is not advisable. There are a lot of issues related to food.

id set the other tank up if i were u. but them that is me

I think I'll do what both of you suggested. For now I'll take Rainbow out during feeding time, and I'll begin the process of cycling the 2 gallon tank so I can move Atlas in there, and when the 5 gallon is done cycling I'll move Ginger into that. My Dad is going to be SO happy I am setting up another tank (not at all happy xD), but I think that will be the best plan of action.

Thanks again for your input you guys!

EDIT: It's actually 2.5 gallons! lol I just measured it and thought I would post that xD

Ok so just thought I would update this, I've been forbidden from setting up the 2.5 gallon tank (or getting another tank in general -_-) So I'll just split the 10 gallon in half and move my snails to the 5 gallon as I originally planned. Thanks again for your help!
