my 30 uk gal tank needs some sholeing fish but i dnt know what to get the carnt be small as my pearl catfish like to eat anything as small as a neon. and in my other tank i can have any size that will be ok wiv tiger barbs

Most rainbowfish would grow too big to be eaten but would shoal and should do fine with both the catfish or the barbs. Plus they have the added bonus of being very colorful. Most will, however, require a larg-ish tank because most get to about 4" so a school needs space. Some have been known to nibble plants but not always. There are plenty of rasboras and barbs that would work. Another great option that would fill out the top layers in either tank is the giant danio.

As for platies not being schooling fish. Well that's true but I have to say that mine have always remained close together and they 'school' better than neons :p (I'm not a big neon fan) However, I think they'd be eaten.
