Shocking Tanks

hmm makes one of my local restuarants seem like gods.

they have a pond in the middle of the raunt, maybe something like 500 gallons maybe more. They have koi in it.
Gods? Not really. Koi in a 500 gallon pond  I guess its not that bad but still half the size they should be in.

I don't really remember coming across any badly stocked tanks, and you'd think I'd hear of some, working in a fish store! But I'm afraid to ask some people what they have in their tanks, LoL, I generally change the subject to what their dog's name is.

There is a Japanese place near my old place in Manchester NH and they have two 55 gallon tanks. One with five 9-12" Koi in it and the other 55 gallong with 3 12-15" Pacu in it.....it is sickening.

Our local chinese takeaway has a medium-sized Tommy tank (those plaggy tanks - I have the XL for snail babies and their's is smaller than ours) with two goldfish in (the fish aren't babies either). The water is always either so green you can't see the fish, or so cloudy you can't see the fish. I did nearly have a heart attack when I went in one time and it was clean.

that 500 gallon is an estimate as i have no idea the real dimensions of it, i've always ended up with alcohol removing some of my memory when i go in there due to the obscene amounts of wine you can get.

id give it a go at about 18" deep by about 10' wide and maybe 15' long as it has space for 15 people to easily sit side by side down the length of it (we did it on a work night out) and four tables alond the width.

actually hold on, let me check a caculator...

ok that works out at 1402 gallons. bloody hell that thing is bigger than i thought. and it holds 5 koi and has beautiful plants in it.

The chinese near me has about a 70L tank with some huuuge goldfish in. And no filtration whatsoever. Poor fishies!
Goldfish are supposed to bring them good luck... More like bad karma for treating them so badly!!!

I am in no way advocating this type of cruelty ,IMO it is discusting BUT in china it is good look to keep a gold fish in your house, it is believed to keep the spirits appeased, and many chinese are very superstitious, so it may be just a case of ignorance on thier part.

BTW chinese monks were the first people to keep fish for decorative purposes in small ceramic bowls, doesn't look like they have learnt much.

in a feng shui book it states that 8 goldfish and 1 black are good luck, and if one dies it is alright as it has simply absorbed the evil

worst I've seen believe it or not is in a fish shop

there's a tiny little pet shop round the corner from mine, we've always driven past and thought we'll see what the fish bits like one day, weren't expecting much but you never know when you might find a hidden gem of a shop..... finally went in the other day, first tank was a tiny little 2 foot job with about 15 dyed parrot fish in there, they were crowded right in and looked awful, next tank had a gourami with fin rot so bad it literally had no fins left! I was so upset we left and couldn't even look at the rest, I was seriously disgusted

i dunno why some people keep fish, iv been looking after someones pets this weekend while they have been away, 2 cats, rabbit guinea pig and fish. The fish tank was so dirty i couldnt see the fish and they were gasping at the surface  It upset me so much i decided to do a big clean out and me and my dad went round to sort it out. They are much happier now :D

good for you for sorting it out though!! just need to have a chat with the people now :) a friend of mines wanted to get newts but had no idea where to buy them. i told him i knew a local supplier adn id tell him where they are, as long as he reads up fully on how to provide a decent environment for them and does just that. his exact reply was "aw no, i just want them". at that point his girlfriend banned him from getting them :D

ok off the beaten track there, sorry.

the local petco shoves 50-70 neons in an 8 gal and all tetras are ALWAYS double overstocked, bala sharks are gigangtiv in a tiny tank
