Her tank is amazing, even nore so when you take into account she is 4! I couldn't imagine my 7 year old girls managing something like that, might have to get them a tank to try tho after seeing that!

She has been around fish tanks since she was born. She is constantly wanting to learn... so I have been teaching her for a few years. The biggest problem she has is over feeding. I noticed today that she has cory fry in her tank. I never saw eggs. I thought they were still too young, but I guess I was wrong. I saw some that are about 1/2 the size of the origional group. I know there are at least 3 fry.

I think that all kids should have a tank if they want one. It is a really great learning tool, and they soak up information like a sponge when they are small. I knew she was about ready to try a tank of her own, but I had no idea that hers would be better than mine. Kids can really surprise you some times.

These pics aren't very good. She needs to do a water change. The water is getting too dark to see in it very well. Instead of tea she is brewing coffee water in there. Apparently the plants and fish like it though...

She hates for me to mess with her tank. I guess she will get ready to do it before long. She usually does before it gets too bad. Her plants look better than mine most of the time, so I don't mess with the way she does it very often.

Shay's doing great! At the rate she's going, she's going to become Louisiana's answer to Mr. Amano! Actually the tannins in the wood may help the plants as well. Supposedly, bogwood realeases trace elements and nutrients into the water as well. I'm sure the plants utilize this. My 20g is pretty tannic and the plants always do very well in it.

I have no idea. It started out as one little leaf that was in with another plant when we got it.
She has decided that we can do a little water change tomorrow. I think she is only doing that because it is getting so dark that the night lighting can't even shine through it any more.
Another thing is that the jelly fish keeps filling with water and won't float. The only way to get it to float is to lower the water so you can fill it with air again. I also have to move her rotala wallichii. It isn't getting enough light any more. I don't know where she is going to put it. I guess we will see.

She is starting pre-k in a couple of weeks. I'm not going to know what to do in an empty house. I have always had at least one of them with me.

i wish i had a fish tank when i was four.. lol when i have kids they arent allowed to be NEAR MINE. especially if i have boys.. they can have their own little one.. and if they said it was bad i would get angry.. like when people say i need to clean my tank because a plant has its leaves flying around

I asked what she thought... I pretty much knew what she would say. I don't get mad when I asked for it. If I am not ready for the answer I just don't ask the question. Besides... sometimes she is right. If I had not thought it needed help I would have never asked.
She doesn't tap the glass. She has been playing around tanks since she first started pulling up to stand. My 29g was on a chest that was eye level to her when she was about 8mos old. I had to teach her at a very young age. The only real problem I had/ still have with her is that she tries to kiss them through the glass. I am forever cleaning the glass. She hugs the tanks too. I am just glad that she is careful when she does it. She thinks that fish need love too... I think I need clean glass!
Life is too short to get angry over the little things... There are plenty of big things to cover that area.
I did take issue when she dumped a full (large) container of food in and killed about 500 guppies and my plec and corys. She thought they were hungry. That made me angry, and I blew a fuse. She didn't mean to hurt them. She did get in trouble, but she was too young to really hold it against her. I shouldn't have left it down where she could get to it. We both learned a lesson that day.

Thanks for the ID on the plant. Should it be flying around like that, or should each one be planted in the substrate? Do you leave it hooked or snip them apart?

It's a stem plant so it will grow to the surface - nipping the end off should prompt it to thicken up and produce side shoots from the stem.
