Shall We Flag As Inappropriate?

SURE Some fish are given as feeder fish as a way of keeping predatory fish alive. But this is not the case with this video.

Here a fish is given to another fish for the amusement of these creepy youngsters. I'm aware that there's a predator/prey cycle in the natural universe that needs to be adhered to; however, I'm not aware that any such thing needs to take place for the sake of entertainment.

I flagged this video, for the same reason I flag videos of frat boys swallowing their Bettas whole. They weren't doing it for food, they were doing it because they thought the animal's suffering was amusing, which I find very disturbing, not just for the fish's sake but also because these kids make me sick to my stomach.

feeding a betta to another fish is about as smart and economical as a human eating a horse instead of a chicken. yes of course it can be done. does not make it a great choice.

Agreed. And if they keep feeding their sunfish "pretty much anything" that it will eat, they're going to end up killing it. Not that they would care, as long as they were entertained in the process. Totally thoughtless and irresponsible kids, parents probably the same way.

I think I flagged it under "promotes youth violence" or something like that, as I don't really think Youtube will see it as animal abuse.

I cleaned up a bunch of posts that were wy off topic. I really hate seeing this type thread as it can only lead to people getting upset and if one person makes a comment that is interpreted in the wrong way, it goes way off topic. Please keep to the topic.

Thank you.

Again, my apologies.

Most can be weaned onto dead fish

Yep, and those dead fish were once live fish?
Yes, but that's not the point at all...

Our fish food is full of fish meal too, and creating this is a pretty horrific process.

The point is that the species commonly used as feeder fish are unsuitable as such (nutrition wise), and the whole concept of feeder fish means that they are usually in really bad health and can pass on diseases and the like to what they are being fed to.

On top of that there's the welfare issues.

And then there's the fact that people think it's perfectly acceptable to effectively torture a fish to death (look at youtube)- when it can be easily avoided.

There's two things going on here. There's the 'circle of life' that nature dictates, and then there's the human intervention in that 'circle'. Whilst many fish end up being consumed by other fish (fry by their parents, eg guppies/mollies) and many other predatory fish, there is nothing in nature saying a sunfish will naturally catch/kill a betta. For starters I am pretty sure they would never meet in nature, and even if they did, I am pretty certain that the betta would have either the sense or basic survivalistic instinct to stay away from said sunfish. To place a betta in a no-win situation where it is caught within 1 second of entering the tank, equals to nothing more than sick human intervention in to nature's affairs.
Granted these kids are just that, kids, but there are limits to what is considered acceptable development of adolescents, and I am quite sure that this goes beyond those boundaries.
Whether fish eat other fish is neither here nor there, the concept of 'feeder fish' is irrelevant, what this video does is how these individuals to be the immature emotionally disturbed people that they are, to the extent that they view this as a source of entertainment.
The key thing for all involved in this discussion, is that no matter how much we rant and rave for the better standards of life we want for all domestic fish, there will always be people that want to be 'different', and the sad thing is that we will never be able to prevent all cases of this type of thing, and the best thing we can all do is approach this kind of thing in an emotionally detached way, and deal with it insensitively. There is no point getting emotionally upset/angry about something that has already been done. All we can do is continue to fight for awareness to try to ensure that these instances are kept to the absolute minimum.
There, 'nuff said.

Ok....so this person sent me a message. Did anyone else get it? (i will share it, because i dont think the kid knew what they were doing was wrong perhaps?) They have obviouslly gone to my videos and seen my cichlid video i took of mine swimming around. He asked for advice so i gave him constructive advice back....to avoid any more bettas being given as food...

i know u no who i am.

wut do u feed the cichlids i just got one and the guy sold us some stupid pelets wut do u feed your fish

My reply:
Hey :)

Wow i totally forgot i posted this one up. I fed ours a food called Spectrum Grow - By New Life. It has everything from krill to shrimp to protien and vitamins in it. It really helps with growth and colour enhancement. Our aquarium uses it for all their fish.

we do normally feed him feeder fish, that was one time we fed him a beta because it had to go. I'm sorry if our videos made you angry and i don't blame you for posting a bad comment. I don't take a bad comment persomally, I use them to improve on what other people think.

I havent replied at this stage. I might suggest other things to feed the fish other than live fish.

lol, I still left a message on the video. If he cared, he should take the video down.

NLS is good!!! All my fish are on it too. It does wonders with picky eaters as well... it's about the only thing you can get moorish idols to eat for instance. A lot of marines that are notoriously hard to feed, end up thriving on NewLife Spectrum. Only real downside to that stuff is the price... it really adds up when you have all your fish on it.

In my opinion the welfare issue with live feeders is not so much the way they die but the way they live. They are almost invariably raised in small, spartan, cramped tanks that are overstocked and underfiltered, they are fed on crap, they basically have crap lives. If people kept their feeders in spacious tanks and looked after them properly, and they were happy and stress free until fed to the predators, well I wouldn't consider that any different or any worse than us raising sheep, cattle, pigs, chickens etc. for the purpose of killing them for food. I'm not a vegetarian, but I'm picky about my food. I will not touch cage eggs, fish unless I know it was farmed or caught from a sustainable fishery, or grain fed beef and pork (because I believe feedlots are cruel, I have seen them and they are disgusting.)

But yeah... just because you're using feeders doesn't mean that YouTube needs to see it. There is a difference between feeding a fish to a predatory fish to satisfy the dietary needs of the pred, and feeding one fish to another fish, filming it and gloating about it on the Internet. When the use of feeders becomes entertainment rather than part of caring for your fish, I think it's wrong... I flagged.

Yeah its fantastic food. :good: But so expensive. All our fish thrive on it so i guess the price is good. We get a discount because we get everything from where the food comes from. Even my bettas love it. Im just concerend now hes gone and gotten another fish/cichlid he stated and doesnt have room for it or know how to keep it.

It's good to see the kid is asking for advice. The betta incident still seemed to be more for his entertainment than his fish's needs, but at least he apologized and is open to other ideas.
