1) Less than 5 hours between question and "people here seem to know little or nothing...", be patient you have to give people some time to answer your question, people on the forum have lives too.
2) Shale is pretty inert, and can be used for a lot of things in the aquarium. I built a cave by with shale and silicone a few years back. The only possible issue if is there are impurities in the shale, which you can see like white streaks or grey streaks or something else. Those could potentially cause problems, and need to be identified before you are 100% sure. However, chances are exceptionally small that it is anything that can be really bad, and I personally wouldn't get too worried about it so long as the amount of impurities are small and your conditioner has heavy metal neutralization capabilities and you keep up with your water changes.
