sexing guppy fry pt.2

gravid spot = females.
gonopodium[sp?] = male spot, the 'penis' of the fish.

the gravid spot is where the female carries her eggs. when they are fertilized it becomes larger and you will be able to see small circles int he gravid spot. this si the eggs developing into fry. if the female is rather large and her gravid spot changes color sometimes when it starts to change back to black you will be able to see the fry in there. usually this happens when you just try the light on int he mornings. i ahve seen my fry a few times but it is not always possible to see them. because the fry rest when mom rests and change color when she does. they might not be able to be seen at all. how ever when she is really HUGE you will be able to make out the eggs which look like little circles inthe gravid spot.

i think you guys are just making this harder than it really is. the gravid spot doesnt mean pregnant it just means female. i can usually sex my fry from about 1 to 2 weeks of age and in some fry i can tell at about 5 days old and i seperate the one that i can tell right away. remember if you cant tell what it is then leave it with the males. you dont want one male getting all your females pregnant. you would rather have one female pregnant and be able to do selective breeding on the others.

This thread has gone insanely retarded. Whoever said these 4 week old baby guppies were pregnant, doesn't know anything professional about livebearers.

Even though some sites say it is possible, there is NO way these guppies are pregnant. They're just female.

There was no need for that post.

anyway

I always sexed my fry by the gravid spot, at 4 weeks old, and I always been right. Female gups can breed at 4 week, males at about 8-12 weeks. Depends on the fish a genetics mainly.

Someone needed to step in and let all these poor people know there is no way they are pregnant.

& magically delicious, or whatever your name is, maybe you should read the posts better? I said they WERENT pregnant and yes, they were infact being called pregnant. So don't tell me "to read better" with an attitude, because I read and understood it better than you did.

well i wasnt talking to you anyway so eat it.

i was talking about sarah post. which was a rediculous reply to someone who is new and knows nothing about sexing fry from guppies.

and i never said they were pregnant at 4 weeks i said they can become pregnant at 4 weeks................... do some research PLEASE

Okay, you all. There was obviously a misunderstanding, or whatever you want to call it...but let's be nice to each other. :) We don't want this post to turn into a big fight.

Relax. We're all friends. :flowers:

(By the way...this isn't directed at anyone in paticular, so don't feel picked on!)

I was wondering why my females allways had gravid spots even though I took all the boys out as soon as I found them. I was beginging to wondering if I wasn't going to end up with a bunch of Jesus guppies in a couple of months...
