sexing guppy fry pt.2

As soon as you can! :)

You might have to look closely, and it might take a while...but the earlier you can seperate them, the better. Just check the female tank often for late-developing males. :)

This thread has gone insanely retarded. Whoever said these 4 week old baby guppies were pregnant, doesn't know anything professional about livebearers.

Even though some sites say it is possible, there is NO way these guppies are pregnant. They're just female.

they arent preganant... please read the post better........... they are just female

i didnt say that you shuold breed them at 4 weeks i said if you leave them with developed males they can start to breed at 4 weeks old. that is why you should seperate them from developed males as soon as you see a gravid spot. the gravid spot is always there from the time of birth but when it starts to get big and black or ahve beenw ith developed males they are pregnant. females should not be breed until at least 5 to 6 months.. as this is when they become adults. try looking up the development of guppies most guppies are not fully ready or developed enough untill they are adults. including tail and body size. guppies reach adulthood at 6 months of age. please research before you give advise to some one........

The gravid spot is not the eyes of the developing fry, it is present on all mature livebearing females (maybe even earlier in guppies), although you can see the fry’s eyes in the gravid spot when the female is pregnant and the fry are quite large

So what exactly is it then? The lining of the uterus? Or what.... -_-

Though thanks for the clarification Draig Goch, I guess I've always been told the wrong thing. My books lie! :p

I guess so!

Meh...I guess it's funny in a way, but it could really mislead people, like it has me all the time. I figured it couldn't just be the fry though, because after several years of keeping Livebearers, all females, they still have gravid spots but never had fry. Makes sense now.

What exactly is it though?

And geez, everywhere online says it's the fry, and it means she's pregnant...etc. Maybe you should make a topic about this Ddraig Goch, and perhaps someone could pin it, just so it's more understood?

Most on-line sites do seem saying that the gravid spot is a sign of pregnancy but virgin females have one too, I don't know why they say this. :dunno:

It's difficult to find an explanation of exactly what a gravid spot is but I guess it's unfertilized eggs, they must be in there somewhere!?! :) :fish:

Hehe, that's confusing. "It means they pregnant...but non- pregnant ones have it too...I mean...ah well, I guess you'd have to an expert like me to tell when they are pregnant..." :p

I guess it could be the eggs...but I wouldn't think they'd be that dark, seeing as when females abort, the eggs are usually light colored. But who knows. Speaking of gravid spots....I wish my darn female high-fin would have her fry already...it's been 2 months! Must be slow growers. :X

I wonder what magicallydelicious has to say about it?

magicallydelicious are you about???

Do you know what the gravid spot actually is?

Eggs?
Fry making internal organs?
Something to guide the males to the right place?

????

 Sorry, that is too funny. Like a little sign saying "Right here!". Whooo, okay...I need more sleep. :p

Though I'd think they could use their sense of smell, or whatever fish have to guide them there...since they can sense the pregnancy hormones. I'm thinking it's something more internal...like you mentioned. I'm going to search around. :)

Though yes, magicallydelicious...you seem to be an expert about female Guppies and gravid spots...what exactly is it? :)

There was no need for that post.

anyway

I always sexed my fry by the gravid spot, at 4 weeks old, and I always been right. Female gups can breed at 4 week, males at about 8-12 weeks. Depends on the fish a genetics mainly.
