Our red sevs spawned 2 weeks ago but the salvini ate the eggs. Theyre looking as if theyre going to spawn again. The problem is we dont have a spare tank big enough to put the adults in. We,d like to remove the eggs when they lay.How difficult is it to hatch eggs without the parents and whats the best way to do it. We realise the male may be sterile but we want to give it a go anyway.

And another question but it may be a stupid one. Our jag in the naughty tank is in with a male convict. Theyve got very friendly and have decided to clean and defend a coconut shell. Is it possible for these 2 to cross breed. Not even sure of the sex of the jag.

Raising fry is not difficult, just hard work. You need to put the eggs in a seperate tank with an airstone next to the eggs to simulate the parents fanning the eggs, use a pipette to suck off any white eggs to stop the rest getting infected. Daily wc is essential to keep the eggs healthy, the cleaner the water the better. Sev eggs should hatch around 3 days, free swimming fry 5-7 days, then you can start feeding them, decapsulated brine shrimp, crushed tetra prima is very good fry food as you can get it to a powder, at about 2 weeks old you can give them cyclops (frozen food) which is baby brine shrimp, baby daphnia and other small tasty stuff. Daily wc are also needed with the fry.

I think the convict & jag could attempt to breed, not sure if they would be sucessfull though.

Would be interesting looking fish if they could but imagine the personality

We,ll definitly give it a go with the sevs but the worst about it will be if its not successful we,ll not know if it,s us or the male.

If the male is infertile all the eggs will be white the following day, unless like my male keyhole he just misses completely

A severum cross convict has an evil streak to it, I dread to think what a jag sev would be like
