Hi peeps, whats the smallest tank i could fit a couple of severums in?, i have a 180 ltr juwel rio which im not sure what to stock with and the other half really wants one.

What im asking is could i keep say 2 in a 180 juwel rio, other tank mates will be a group of 6-10 sterbai cory's and either a couple of BN's or some other sort of small plec species. Tank will be filtered or should i say is filtered with a fluval 305 and a fluval 205 externals so filtration isn't an issue.

How placid are severums in relation to cory's and plecs?, would or could i have issues as they mature not only with each other but other tanks mates.

Oh and one last thing, tank temp will be kept at 80 is this ok with them?

thanks

Hey hon, no is the short answer to that, ideally they require a 75usg tank, so a rio 180 is way too small, they can reach up to 10" so you can see how that wouldnt be large enough. Sorry :)

As to the corys and plecs, no problems with them whatsoever, temp needs to be between 23-28c, Sev's are relatively placid cichlids, although you always get an exception to the rule, but generally speaking they are placid and dont bother anyone.

Oh well i guess it was worth checking, had an idea it may be to small but hey will have to find something else now lol :)

I would love your daemons hun, the other half said i cant spend the money with Christmas looming though, im guessing the tank is probably to small for them aswell anyways :(

Will be upgrading to a rio 400 sometime after Christmas so will have to see what i can get when i do.

Thanks for the help anyways mags, new you would be around to help ;)

I share your pain of wanting a sev but not having a big enough tank yet you are not alone. The thing that sucks most is that there is not a compromise for them like some other cichlids. :(

Do you have any ideas of other cichlids you like?

In a rio 400, you could have two severums no problems, plus indeed the daemons, who need a 75g minimum for a group! (or similar geophagus species) :good:

To be honest, cichlids in general are not my thing, give me a plec and im happy lol, the sevs were really for the other half who has wanted them for ages but just didn't a spare tank to keep them, now i haven't got a tank big enough to keep them lol(typical).

I think i will just let her have and stock the 400 when i get it and have a couple of sevs in there mixed with some L200's and L128's and just stock this 180 with plecs again ;)(not smiling really lol)

That may be the stocking plan then when i get the 400, some daemons and the sevs with the larger plecs.

Thanks again hun

Cichlids and Plecos mix well together. I keep plecos in my tanks with cichlids it's great. a little messy but besides that its all good.

It was more the particular plec needs been suitable for the cichlids on that side, the species i probably would have added if the sevs were able to go in would have been higher temp species so was just making sure really. The plecs would be priority and the tank mates based round that, if they wasnt a suitable match then i basically just wouldnt have added them ;). I have a couple of rams in the tank at the moment that would have been rehomed if the sevs were suitable but as there not i might just keep them in there, not to sure yet.

Thanks for the reply :)
