Golden Severum breeding
My severums have been trying to breed for about 2 years now,they have a good diet and clean water but the eggs always seem to become white and fungusy.Now this usually happens within 2 days(since last time i can remember),my Ph is above 8,i think this is the problem? Or maybe they are just infertile every time ? If their are any experienced breeders could you put your input in.Could Kh & Gh effect it ,i thought they wern't supposed to be to hard to breed,well atleast not like discus?Oh yeh btw i have a def male + female.I just need advice from experienced people please.

I have the same thing going on.. severums lay eggs but they turn white after a few days.. don't know why.. I'm just assuming my male is infertile cause I really have no clue.

Ph is tooo hard. lower it and youll proabably get some fry!

Yeh ,when they lay eggs again i'll see if i can put them in a tank with Ro water & see if that works.

do you actually see the male fertillising the eggs as some inexperienced males tend to "forgett" to do this :L

I can't actually remember now,they bread loads last summer but have not bread this year yet.If he was doing that is there anyway to make his breeding senses get into gear? Maybe do cold water changes or lower and higher temps?I want soem babies!

Discusangel is correct the PH is way to high. During breeding/spawning the PH should be around 6.4 for ideal water.

Also this fish should really be kept soft acidic water with a PH of 6.0-7.2

I've always thought that,but on some websites it says then can breed in high ph.O well i'll see if i can get some RO water...

if you leave a few buckets outside they will fill then use them (siv into the tank) and alsoi think thers some sort of block that reduces Ph and one that Rises Ph. ask your lfs never had to use it as my discus are in 6.0Ph perfect i never have to buy RO water. Devon = best place to keep discus trust me!
