Severums Color

Mine is 3" and I would say she is pretty much colored up. Severums change color a lot. They can be light almost yellow then black. It depends on the mood.

Ok So what if there a dark black most of the time.

And i was at the LFS a few hours ago and i seen some gold sev about 4".Would they be ok with 2 1" green sevs?

How fast do they grow? :fish:

:thanks: :Garett

How big is your tank? Or how big of a tank are you willing to upgrade too? 3 severums will need a 100 gal or more. 5ft long by 18in wide 22in deep at the smallest.

Being black or really dark green can mean a few things one breeding colors or excited. Could be stress or some green severums are just a bit darker they some times are called turquoise severums.

Mine goes black when she gets a big chunk of food and is running from the other fish that are trying to take it from her. When I got her she had ich she was all black and would hide.

They grow fast. I got mine in the summer and she was 1" now she is 3". She was the smallest fish I had now she is the second biggest.

Ok thanks, Are they social with their owners cause when i walk in Buddy(thats 1 of there names)goes right up to the glass and like stairs at me and then when i even put my fingers on the glass he still stays there.Hes so cute.and awesome. Is it agression or just greeting me?

I have them both in the little 10g for now until they get abit bigger then after January i am will to go up to 38g and just keep 1

Would it just be better to go with discus im on a tight budget?

if you are on a budget don't eventhink about discus. They are a lot of money need to be kept in groups and need a 60 gal bigger is better.

38 gal is too small for a severum you might get away with a 55 gal for one for awhile. A full grown severum will need a 70 gal they are big fish. Look for a used 55 gal on eBay or craigslist if you are in the US.

There are lots of awesome dwarf cichlids you could look into instead of the large severum. Keyhole, rams, dwarf flag cichlid, smiling acara,Apistogramma ( many differant kinds of these guys ). Mid size cichlids firemouth, convicts, blue acara, just to name a few.

38 is way too small for a severum, particularly because they get so thick and chunky.

Agree with tank size.

Ive found my green to change colour many times during the day, he is about 4-5", sometimes he is completely black, usually during feeding, other times he is completely light coloured, showing all his turquoise colouring too, it depends on their mood.

Ok thanks guys. Around here its really hard to find dwarf cichlids. ill check if i can get some special ordered at petland.
Ill see if i can make an account on aquabid.com. would that be a good idea?

Yeah I would definatly get on Aquabid so jealous we dont have something like that in the UK I mean we have something kind of the same but no where near as good or with the variety of rare stuff on it

If you want cichlids and and can only get a 30 gal it could be a good idea to check aquabid but shipping fish will run $15-$40. Ask you lfs order some would be your best bet.

lol dont worry Im the same I like big cichlids but dont have the tank either.

Some ideas for your tank could be Bolivian Rams, Apistogramma (various individual species), Laetacara Curviceps, Laetacara Dorsiger. Then if you want to go a big bigger you could consider a lone T Bar cichlid or Firemouth or similar. I would avoid breeding this size cichlid as the females will have a lack of place to hide from the male and it can end nastily but if you have a suitable tank to give the female some rest I think you should be okay.
