my sister has a 28litre tank in which shes gonna get a betta and corys. she's bought a fluval 1+ internal filter and i am going to give her some of my well established media sponge to use. does this mean the tank will be cycled immediately? will she be able to put the fish in during the next day or so after filter is in tank?

just did this & it took about 3-4 days before the tank was fully cycled and everything was back normal. I would recommend it if you could wait a few days to make sure everything went okay

Hi, if you fill the filter with matured media and put it in the tank the bacteria will die within hours if you do not feed it.

You could put in some ammonia to make it 4 ppm and if it processes it within 12 hours without nitrite showing then the filter will have remained cycled and ready for fish immediately

If the media is really matured from a completely cycled filter then you must either do the above or put fish in immediately.

a test kit will be needed
