any1 know if that would work

40gal
80F
plants and plenty of sand on the bottom
overfiltered

thanks

what do you mean by "overfiltered"? can you give us some numbers (gph) or a filter make/model?

also, why 80F? that seems a bit warm to me.

its an over head filer in other words. basically a pump which pumps water up into an external container with all the carbon, sponge and all. the water is then filtered through all these before flowing back into the tank.

yeah the 80f is quite questionable. what fish are u keeping?

did have a brackish moray, its a 55 filter in a 40g,should i lower the temprature, maybe like 78F instead of 80, getting f8s and maybe a flounder, thus no really answered my question but thats ok i got some info,any1 know f8s and flounder?

no really answered my question but thats ok i got some info

Lhutch, i and everyone else is willing to work with you, but you need to realize that most combinations of fish are completely situational. i'm glad that you recognize the need for cover in the tank if you're going to make a puffer-centered community, but the water parameters need to be considered too.

figuring out a new set-up is a pretty slow process the first few times and trying to figure out a new set-up for someone over the internet is incredibly slow! what you can do to help us speed up the process is give us as much detail as possible about what you already know. :)

i'm being interuppted in my research, so i'll come back later and let you know what i've found out.

ok well i have had puffers before and im just wondering if they would be ok with a flounder, my lfs got 1 in and i was wondering if it would work

and again

40gal
overfiltered 55gal filter in 40GAL
1.004-5 SG
8.0PH
very little amonia in the water if there is any

like maybe.05
(getting some stuff to reduce that)
cycled filter
sandy bottom
places for them to hide
plants,art and live
(java moss)live
hood on maybe 8 or 9 hours a day
temp is 80 i could put it lower i have a 55gal heater to
maintains temp very very well
i have a snail breeding set up(a medium sized glad tub in a feeder tank, put the snails in have them breed, take big snails out, poir small snails in with the puffs
cleaner ghost shrimp in the 40gal/food
i have freeze dried krill food, frozen brine shrimp, snails, clams in freezer to feed, etc
empty tank
planning to put pineapple mollies with the puffs(maybe i gotta find something they wont nip at)
plenty of medications(slime-coat,marine salt,)
planning on putting in a quarantine tub somewhere

i dont know what else info i can get
willing to upgrade tanks as they grow
f8 puffs

It is impossible to have a cycled filter and ammonia. The 2 simply contradict each other. It's like having a dry day outside, with a little bit of rain. It's a contradiction.

Don't "get stuff to reduce it". Run the filter, let the natural bacteria eliminate it. There is no need to add snake oil to the tank.

A hood on it for 8 hours a day? You'll need a hood on a tank 24/7 if you want to keep puffers. They move quickly when startled, and often that is upwards...

You'll need a heater in there to regulate the temperature.

As for keeping a Sole with a Figure 8, it worked with my SAP's, but not with my salivator puffers. I'd say best to err on the side of caution, and not keep them together. My sole wasn't really an aggressive feeder either and it would probably struggle agains tsome figure 8's

i mean the hood light is on 8 hours a day, i leave it on duh
i have a heater that maintains the temp 24/7
i dont use snake oil
its the stuff u put in the tank and it helps create a slime coat for the fish, stress coat is the name of it
ok i nixed the flounder
any other fish i could put in?
any other suggestions?

"snake oil" is actually just a figure of speech that means "products that don't do everything that they claim". there are a lot of fish products on the market that can be described as "snake oil" since the market is really only regulated so that nothing is directly going to poison your fish. be suspicious of anything claiming to work miracles or solve all of your problems at once--these products are mostly designed to take your money.

while there are chemicals that will get rid of ammonia for you, adding those to your tank won't actually solve the problem. since ammonia is the first waste product seen in the nitrogen cycle, it simply will not be present in a fully cycled tank. if you have ammonia, then your tank is still cycling. end of story. if that's the case, then i suggest adding your mollies first and keep up the water changes until you have no ammonia and no nitrite. it might take a week or so. once you have no ammonia and no nitrite, then your tank is probably ready for your puffers.

have you got a hydrometer or a refractometer?

i did an amonia test today and i have no amonia 8), i had a freshwater live plant in their that was slowly dying and som1 said that is probably causing the spike in amonia,as for nitrates im not sure i dont have anything to test with but i will tomarrow, and yes i do have a hydrometer, and another question i had was i have a 30whisper powerfilter and i heard that when you have a brackish sometimes its good to have two filters, should i do something like that, i also have a powerhead what do u think?

well im sry i figured youd know, its not like take the hood off and switch it on another tank

could you answer my questions tho, tomarrow im going to get some live plants and tradin in my moray, tuesday i get puffs

just be careful about what plants you pick out; many can't handle any salt at all. do a quick search for +plant +nmonks in the Brackish forum for tips.
