I'm tearing down my 20 gallon hexagon soon to make way for a 20 gallon long tank for a more suitable environment to breed my convict cichlids.
anyways. The only supplied hoods they have at the store actually cost more than the #41#### fish tank. I've never set up a tank fro scratch before. I've always bought those silly kits with the lighting and hood and filters and heating included.
The hoods they're selling are made of glass, or so the name suggests, it might just be plastic that looks like glass. I'm unsure what to expect. I think they're made by aqueon (like just about everything here) If they were made of glass, wouldn't the opening and closing of the lid potentially cause shattering if it happens too quickly? Can anyone tell me anything about these glass aquarium hoods?
I hopped over to the lighting section, and saw a bunch of weird lights that sorta hang over the tanks, but none of the display pictures of said lights have lids, and I kinda liked the looks of the lidless picture displays. Does anyone use lidless aquariums on here? What are the advantages and disadvantages? Would I have to worry about anything other than the convicts jumping out and killing me while they're breeding?
Also, what brightness should I be looking for in a tank that's only a foot deep? I'm not aiming for live plants at the moment, but maybe some day I might throw in a few anubias nana anchored to some rocks or something. I don't want to blind my fish with powerful bulbs, and I don't know anything about lights.
Thanks much
