My adult senegal bichir has had a strange lump on her side for a while now (2 weeks or so) it is about 1" long and about 2" from her head - it starts where her dorsal fins start. It is on her side but at the top nearer her back than her belly and is quite obvious, raised out about 1cm - I've got pics which I'll add later as they are still on the camera.

She is swimming and eating normally, has a varied diet of pellets, prawns, bloodworm and algae wafers and is otherwise behaving totally normal, the lump is under the skin, not cut or damaged at all just lumpy.

I got this bichir as an adult about 4 months ago and don't know much about her prior history or diet.

Any ideas?

Is the lump hard of soft like filled with fluid.

All you can do is issolate and try a bacterial med.
What does it look like when she goes to the toilet.
is her anus enlarged or red and inflamed.
Does she look bloated.

Hi Wilder, thanks for coming to the rescue!

Haven't tried to feel the lump but will try later, she's pretty active. Nothing else is odd about her at all - no bloat or redness anywhere, poop normal.

That's good then.
I would still try a bacterial med like anti internal bacteria med by interpet.

Thanks wilder - still not managed to get the pics (other half has the camera) I'll let you know how she gets on.

If the lump hard it could be a tumour.
But I would still try the bacterial med.
Good Luck.

that's what I'm afraid of :( she won't be caught and stay still to check and don't want to cause overdue stress so may have to wait and see if antibacterials. work.

Let me know how the fish gets on.
Good Luck.
