Hmm, essentially the skimmer works by passing the air bubbles up, however the system you have described would keep the protein in the system by just returning it to the sump. The skimmer holds it all in the top cup to allow for easy removal.

I don't think you can get away without good filtration just because there aren't fish in there. The corals and such need good water too, but I don't know for definite. I'm sure someone else will confirm the situation though.
 
Hi sorry maybe i did not make myself clearenough.

When the water reaches the sump it would flow over a bulkhead into a Foam area which can be removed. So the protine foam would sit on the foam and the water would flow through it into the next section.

Or something like that to capture the protine to be removed.

This would not be as effective as a protine skimmer but would do the same job?
I'm just trying to avoid not buying a protine skimmer really as they are so expensive.

Any ideas?
 
Yeah i think this is the approach i will take for now but hey i haven't even built the tank yet.

That will happen soon.
I just need to get 2 pannels of glass and i'm away.
