The two other tanks I have and all the things in it I got from friends who used to be into the hobby. I went to go purchase a new tank + canapoy from Big al's today in Canada but thought the prices were a bit much.

It's a glass 20 gallon tank, 30"X12" and it costs $40CAD. The canopy which has a build in fixture is $60 CAD so thats $100 not including tax, a stand or a light bulb(Which is $30).

Since my friends are not into the hobby anymore, thought I would ask some of you.

If those were UK prices in pounds, I'd say they wern't too bad for an in-store price tag, however, I can't comment on the value of the tank in Canada, as I am not based there.

However, I'm sure internet prices would be less than in a shop. Once you have internet prices, you may be able to use them to negotiate a lower price in the shop. If you can't get them any lower, you can always fall back on that internet source :good:

All the best

I am in the states and have seen similar prices in the local pet shops. That does not mean that I believe they are good prices. I go on line at Craigslist and ebay and on forums like this and look at listings. Garage sales and local newspaper want ads are another source. As you already know from your first 2 tanks, when people get out of the hobby they place little value on the used equipment. If you are patient you can do much better. If you must have new, get the best price you can on a bare tank at a store, then go on line for the rest. Heaters, filters and the like are much cheaper at places like Doctors Foster & Smith or at E-Bay than you will find in most local stores.

OldMan47 has it on the money, generally used equipment goes for half the cheapest retail price you can find. You can pick up used equipment way cheap at auctions as well, these are usually organized through local clubs. For a club that may be near you check out http://fins.actwin.com/dir/clubs.php

It is well worth a drive, you can often get used tanks for a few dollars.
