Second Hand Tank Need Help

to simplify things & after doing this for YEARS I suggest just getting a razor blade and while the fish are still in there scrape the insides of the tank, do a proper water changes and let the filter take up the rest, afterwards replace the media.

thing is i want to rearange my tank and add some slate also i was just wunderin wat i would have to do to clean the slate as it has got a powdery substance on it :good:

Hmm...when I added rocks from nature to my tank, I put them in the bathtub(after the bathtub got a thorough water wasting rinse) and just scrubbed them down w/my hand and the water. What type of powdery substance? Does it have a smell?

Not crack is it  ? You naughty thing you :p .....

Now...I'm just kidding :D

WOW!!! :fun: :hyper: This is my 400th post!!

ha im sure that it isnt crack  well i hope. this is whatr happend i got the slate of a builder and as i wa carrying it home i got full of powder dont know what powder it is and there is no smelll but this may be because i have just scrubbed and rinsed them :good:

just to make sure all slate is ok to put in tank 1s cleaned isnt it?

should be fine...unless there's definite mineral lines in it. Where it's broken, there would be brown or red or whatever color lines. If it looks like they're rusty, I've heard that'll give some real algea probs. But a couple bristlenose plecs should help w/algae. Plus, the cichlids will pick at it too!

My slate looks like it has some granite in it...which is fine also! Post some pics if you can...get a free photobucket acct at photobucket.com and you can resize and post them from there!

A razor blade does work well for buildup on the glass, just be careful around the silicone. If you keep the media wet you shouldn't have cycling issues, if you fast the fish for 24 hours before the move, then feed lightly for the next week you will also prevent cycling issues. Less food consumed means less waste produced.
