My api test kit has been telling me my tank has an ammonia reading of 0.25. Now I found this strange as its an extremely well maintained tank. So I tested the water straight from the tap and guess what? 0.25 ammonia!! Anyway took advice on here and got something called Seachum prime. Do people recommend this? Will it lower ammonia to a reading of 0?

from what i understand it wont remove it but it will make it less toxic

When did you test the tank water, before or after a water change? What type of tests are you using?
0.25 of ammonia should be gone in a matter of hours in a cycled tank.
Prime won't remove it but convert it to something else that is not toxic to fish until the filter gets rid of it completely.

Prime will only temporarily neutralise toxins which can still be used by the beneficial bacteria, this effect only lasts ~24 hours.

Yes Prime will neutrialize them Ammonia and by the time it's effects wear off it your filter (if Mature) should have cleared up the ammonia.

Edit: Sorry this has already been mentioned so +1 to what snazy said.

As well as binding ammonia, it's also super concentrated. The best value dechlorinator in my opinion.

Prime does not remove any ammonia. Instead it will cause the ammonia in a tank to be less toxic to fish. I use only Prime in my tanks because it contains the same active ingredient as in most dechlorinators and does the job with very small doses. That makes it economical to use, which definitely matters when you run 26 tanks like I do. I get about 1 ppm of ammonia when I measure my tap water after dechlorinating it. What I find happens is that the ammonia is gone just a few hours after a water change. The biofilter in my tank has simply converted the ammonia right through from ammonia to nitrite to nitrate. I almost never can find any ammonia or nitrite in my tank unless I test it right after a water change, before my filter has had a chance to work on that ammonia in the tap water.
