After many years I have managed to find a breeding pair of bristle-nosed catfish and now have babies for the second time. I also have an FX5 filter and until I notice I have new babies half of them go into the filter. They are ok and I can get them out and back into the tank, I then put a filter bag over the filter outlet basket so they don't get sucked in again.

Debris collects on the filter bag and comes off into the tank when the bag needs cleaning so I'm looking for suggestions as to any better methods of preventing them getting sucked into the filter. Any suggestions?

A sponge will work too. Food gets sucked onto the sponge during feeding time but my fish always get it clean for me, my bristlenose has to fight for her share on it with the angels.

Try this, Stainless Steel Aquarium Fish Shrimp Filter Guard, its shrimp safe so it will be Bn safe.

Excellent. I can get mesh that will do the job and make my own. For someone who considers himself to be quite bright I never thought of actually removing the existing filter basket and making a mesh substitute, I've always tried to make the existing basket safer with varying degrees of success.

Thanks for that.
