Sand

I went to Argos! £3 for 15kg....or the fish shop was doing £15 for 8kg! 4 washes and the water was running clear, i can deal with that. All my fish are happy

so here is before the change (after i started taking water out as i forgot to take the photo!)

Water needs a but of time to settle, but i guess in a few hours the filter will have sorted that out :)

good job i got the same sand and yes mine is settling now lol will try get some pics up later

In my opionion, there are no cons with sand, they are all pros! Sand looks amazing, I put a good 3 inches in my tank and made it undulating and natural.

Check my sig for pics (they are a little old now and its changed a bit but you will see the sand anyway.

Good luck with the change, you wont regret it!

Oh, I forgot to metion, the gasses arent a massive issue, perhaps get something that will sift through the sand like a kuhli loach?

I love sand. I changed my gravel to sand a few months ago and it looks MUCH better! (plus the clown loaches love it!)

Good posts guys,

Does anyone have any piccies of black sand?

I'm looking at possibly changing over from gravel to sand, but the plants and gases and possible filter jamming shakes me a bit.

Plants I have no idea about, but I can tell you gases shouldn't be a problem. It is only a small risk and to avoid it I use my finger and move the sand around a bit when I do the water changes. It takes two mins.

As for the filter jamming, I raised my internal filter as high as it would go and this reduced the amount of sand that got in. It never jammed. I then switched to an external filter and have not had any problems with sand getting in it.

Thanks, problem I have is that my filter is an internal Juwel one - I did consider going to an external, but don't believe I can take the horrid black plastic casing out of my current one... :(

Just raise the filter so the intake is as far away from the sand as possible.

Unless you can't with Juwel - I have never had one so have no idea!
