Sand Worries Is Now A Ph Worry

Final update:
So I checked the pH again today (day 3) and it is still the same as the tap water, pH 8.2.

I've decided, however, that I don't want to risk anything so I got a bag of Argos sand yesterday and will be using that for my tank. :) Although I initially wanted to go for the dark substrate look, I really like how pretty the sand is. Looking forward to the delivery of my tank today and finally being able to get started with setting up and cycling!!!

Hi! Thanks for your message - the 8.2 reading is the tap water that has been standing for the same amount of time as the tap water + sand. I did readings every 24 hours and throughout, the pH has been 8.2.
Thanks also for the link to the other substrate but given that I've got the Argos sand now, I think I'm just going to go ahead with it. :)

just tap water by its self nothing in

that's what I did - if you read my third post in this thread about my mini experiment, it should make sense :)

i also brought some of that argos play sand today. 3 quid for 20kg compared to 15 quid for half as much next door at pets at home. does anything need to be doen to the sand before it goes in the tank ? also, whats the ebst way to put water in the tank with sand on the bottom, so as to avoid kicking the sand up as much as possible?

Hi! I found argos sand pretty clean and after three or four rinses in a big bucket, it was fine. Just wash it until the water runs clear :) As for when you fill up the tank, put a plate or bowl at the bottom of the tank at the point where you pour in, that'll avoid the sand going everywhere.

when filling the tank put a large dinner plate upside down on the sand and pour ur water onto the plate. stops the force of the water kicking up as much sand its not perfect but it helps

hi thanks for your help. my first thought was putting a chopping board in the tank along the lines of a plate. forgive the maybe dumb question, but how exactly do you rinse sand ?

add the sand to a bucket and add a hose and keep the water running and stir the sand about to let the water circulate through it. best to do it outside or u could do it in the sink or bath. the dirt and stuff will float out the bucket as it overflows and sand should be left in the bucket. keep doing it till the water runs clear
