Sand, Rocks, Glass Pebbles...

When creating the base look for your aquarium, what do you prefer to use?

Do you flatten it out or make a few hills/dips?

Do you use multiple products in combinations?

How much ground space do you leave? (free of decor and plants)

I've just changed one of my tanks over to sand & made hills & dips.
I left quite a bit free from plants & decor this time

Just wondered what others do, since I'm somewhat new at this. Trying to find different ways of setting it up. The guy at Petco told me all fish need flat level terrain... I looked at him and smiled then told him politely i didn't believe him

In their natural habitat the bottom isn't flat, & in a tank I think some different levels give perspective

I use sand in my tank and I am planning on having small piles of rocks scattered all throughout the tank with a nice piece of driftwood, and I would never consider this a "flat terrain" right now I just have the sand, numerous bottom plants, one big rock, and some driftwood, and I don't see how this is flat, and my fish are in perfect condition

I tend to use rolling surfaces of coarse sand/fine gravel. I add in wood, live plants and rock structures so that I don't end up with a boring flat surface. It is not for the fish, it is for me. The fish don't really seem to care what the tank looks like but I do. My tanks vary greatly in appearance but I only use very plain arrangements for things like fry grow out tanks where I will be changing half the water every few days. Removing half the water and replacing it will quickly destroy any effort you made at decoration.

Actually I've notices that if you have lots of cover in the bottom of the tank, then the fish will love swimming through it
