I have just boughta new tank and have loads of gravel from my old tank still left. I want to try and grow java fern and java moss in my new tank and have a lot of live plants but im posting here to ask if plants would root better in sand or gravel ?

Plants will root well in either, just down to personal preference, I hate sand so say gravel everytime.

Java Fern and Java Moss need to be attached to something and should not be buried in the substrate anyway,

I've not found a difference between gravel and sand, when it comes to plants. It's more about the fish; if you want anything that has barbels (corydoras, loaches) you'd be better with sand.

It depends on how fine the sand is. I've had plants fail to root because (I assume) the sand was so fine it just wouldn't hold them.

I have a base of about an inch of gravel and a top layer of sand and I find it works well :)
