Sand? Expensive Or Cheap Stuff

hi guys, im from sheffield(UK) and the local fish shop i use wants £20 for a dark coloured sand to go over the pete/plant soil, i saw somewhere on here people bought some play sand for like £3 a bag. can someone point me in a direction please

argos playsand is what youre after.

or toys r us, tesco or many garden centres sell playsand cheap Just give it a good wash, then another good wash and another.......etc etc, you get the point

yeah just found it now . how many bags would i need in a 29g tank with 1/2 inch to an inch of plant soil stuff?

i only used 1 bag in my 29 gal an still had a 1/4 left over

probably get away with 1 i rekon. i used 4 in my 100 gallon and had pretty much 2 inch depth all over

I would never EVER use Argos play sand, its nasty horrible stuff i had nothing but problems, plants rotting, fish issues the lot. As soon as i binned it and replaced it with Carib Sea Black Moon Sand all my issues vanished.

you obviously didnt wash it properly then neither myself or anybody else i spoke to on here has had any issues with it .

i dont think you can blame the sand for the plants rotting, it is a combination of factors that need to be looked at. Mine certianley grew ok anyway (see sig)

It was washed perfectly fine, it is just crap sand, there is a reason its called play sand and not aquatic sand

You should get some silicate remover for your filter medium if ur going to use cheap sand

ive had play sand since day one never had issues with it at all didn't use the argos sad though i bought mine from B&Q but i suppose it just the same sand as argos play sand
