A little, but your mounds won't last long anyway, because tank currents and fish will move it about.

Im on the same boat, mounds are really hard to keep no matter the size, If you really want one maybe you could make a type of dam but Im not sure how it would work.

I think that I can find something to put in the corner of the tank so that I will only need to put about .75" of sand over it, probally less.

But wouldn't that remove the nitrAte? Or will more just be reproduced?

could you illuminate, for me, as to why your are worried about the removal of nitrates? one of the main reasons we do water changes is to to remove them.

I have been thinking about puting something under it. So then I wouldn't have to worry about the bacteria, or fish destroying it.

folk law, wives tales and misinformation abound in fish keeping. truth is, some people use the bacteria in their substrate, as part of their filtration. in the normal course of things, no damaging bacteria form in your tank.

I use rocks or stones. a small pile causes a build up. you need to take account of the flow in your tank (for best placement) but, after a while, compaction will form a stable landscape

As said above, the flow of the tank will make its own landscape, my tank has some nice build up, and undulations around the rocks, decor and plants
