i heard that you can use sand blasting sand for fish tanks- is that true?

~thanks!

It sure is. They call this stuff red flint and it is packaged for sand blasting.

I had a hard time finding any blasting sand.. Pool filter sand was a bit easier to come by

The stuff I found at harbor freight reacted to a magnet so I passed on buying any.for one not exactly sure what metal is in there and also don't want my magnetic cleaner to pick any up and scratch my tank

Good to know. I've never bought it for an aquarium, so never thought to check for metal in it. I do however buy play sand from lowes, again though I've never checked for metal in it.

I love the pool sand I found. easy to rinse out, cost just $10 for 50#. Is pretty white though. I love the look but fish may object with dull coloring.. I'll just have to see

That sand's whiter than mine. O.O (well mine has same shade of white, but also has some black pebbles here and there, which makes it look more like checkerboards)

You can use sand blasting sand, but, it tends to be more coarse then play sand. As it's not for human 'playing with', I chose to stay away from it and bought childrens play sand from B&Q.

Remember however, it will tank a good amount of rinsing before it can be used.

i will look into it. i am happy with my play sand but i would be willing to go whiter or to black sand blasting sand if i can find some!

The irritation part sounds like it could give bottom feeders quite an itch...

Plus any swallowed by bottom dwellers or sifters could damage their insides.

Depends on fish choice mate, although typical children's play sand or aquarium sand is the safer choice

Yeah, I bought aquarium sand and one of my fish constantly eats it. Crazy swordtail. At least she passes them out.
