Sand As A Substrate

im thinking about changing my substrate from stones to sand, i have a plec an 5 cory who are bottom dwelers will this affect them in any way thanks ryan

I love it! I thought it would be cloudy when you disturb the sand, but it behaves very well altogether.

Most bottom dwellers are generally happier on a sand substrate as it is less damaging to their barbels when they forage for food. Sand is also easier to maintain as all the crap stays on the surface. The only bad thing is that pockets of "bad air" can form in it, especially under rocks. As part of your weekly maintainance ive read that its a good idea to poke a wire coathanger into the sand to release any bubbles.

From personal experience sand looks fantastic but is definately more hassle than it's worth in my mind. Muck stays on top making it near impossible to keep looking nice for long.

Tahitian moon sand looks fab but is expensive, perhaps that's a possibility.

Yes, nitrogen can build up in the sand and is best to give a poke around every few days.
