Salt Meter?

Hi i bought one of those salt meter things yesterday and soaked it in salt water as it said and tested it today and it read 1.004 but how do you know it is working?

can you give us a description of the salt measuring device, or a photo of it?

A...hydrometer? If so make sure its not cracked, hasn't sat for 1 year w/o use and make sure you flick the meter to get the bubbles out. It should read clearly then =]

Make up a solution with a known qunatity of salt and measure it -- if the measurement is the same as the known solution then it is probably working. If you wanted to be really exacting with it, you'll want to make up about 3 different test solutions and make sure that the hydrometer is reading accurately on all three.
