I have this 40g tank with live rock, two clownfish and two gobies. Usually people hve a problem with salt level going up. I am having trouble with it because it keeps going down...for a few days its at 1.021. Then from one day to the next its at 1.016. I thought it my be my refractometer but i tried with the different one and same reading. Other than that my tank is cycled. So what can cause it to go down like that?

There are a few common causes for dropping sg reading:
- Salt deposits forming around the edge of the tank. It happens from regular water splashes slowly over time, all the time. This is one of the reasons you need to check sg periodically and not just rely on a marker of where the waterline should be.
- Doing water changes using new water with a sg that was unexpectedly low.
- Adding too much freshwater either due to a buggy top-up system or just not keeping track of exactly where the waterline normally is.
- Measurement error, either on the older reading or the new one.

The last 3 are usually what account for sudden, large dips in sg, while the salt deposits usually take longer to have a noticeable effect.

I will check on this see what os happening. Thanks!
