Safe Start

As a general rule, the bacteria in a bottle products are useless. The only ones that seem to work are Bio Spira in the US and Bactinettes in the UK. Both of those products are refrigerated.

try and avoid chemicals, if using tap water then a good tank safe is recommende but otherwise avoid chemicals

Hi turnnidge,

I'm following the recommendations of this site and doing my fishless cycling "straight up", not adding extra things.

After several months of participating with the hobbiests here I've formed the opinion that they really know what they are talking about.

When PFK reviewed SafeStart, I remember they said that while it does seem to stop Ammonia going too high, there was still a problem with high Nitrites after adding fish. I'm quite sure that a little mature filter media will blow anything except Bio Spira and Bactinettes out of the water, if you'll pardon the expression.
