Running Filters In Tandem

the ecco was first inline doing the mechanical filtration and the pro was doing biological and polishing.
Now that's why I think it went wrong. My experience with running tandem filters (each doing both) and cleaned at different intervals - have always been positive. I just didn't know what to expect of the Rena Filstar and that's why I considered adding the Eheim.

Which I will indeed to and report back ;)

let me know how you get on
I will certainly report back in this thread :) - but it may well be a few weeks at least - if not months - to get an accurate view. However that said - from all I've read the Rena Filstars have a nasty reputation of being hit and miss on the noise level factor. Something I absolutely will not tolerate. So if I set up this filter and still find it noisy, it will go very snappily on eBay and replaced with a couple (or one) Eheim.

ok I'll add my experiance to this.

I ran two eheims in tandem one ecco2234 & one eheim pro 2224.
the ecco was first inline doing the mechanical filtration and the pro was doing biological and polishing.
this worked a treat for a week, then it all went pants up.

I firmley belive that running two exact same filters in line will work, but not two different ones.

ah, well I guess running two filters in parrallel then should be a better idea, unless I can get another JBL filter for a good price.
Thanks everyone

just to clear things with you boys i have set up the rena and the eheim to run side by side not joined up because i.m.o when cleaning you would have to do both filters on the same day ( and it's bad enough doing an 80 LTS water change ) every week without cleaning 2 filters on the same day, the way i'm doing it i can give each filter a clean once a month but at 2 week intervals so 1 is going at all times without to much hastle to the tank, and i only have carbon in the rena along with all the other media that go's with it as it's bigger than the 2224 and is a that we bit easier to clean and reprime. and last of all the rena does make a wee bit more noise than the eheim but not enough to bother ( THE WIFE ) OR THE BAT as i like to call her, and because i have the 2 filters going now with them both on spray bars just out of the water i dont need the powerhead pumping with an air hose ( that was making more noise then anything else )

since my last reply i now have in tank

5 XRAY TETRA
5 BLACK NEONS
5 ANGELS ( SMALL )
3 CORY'S
3 GOURAMI (RED )
----------------------------------
AND NEW TO THE LIST
10 BLUE NEONS
3 CLOWN LOACHES

It can blow the 2nd filter up if you run one into the other to much presure

just do what i do on all my exturnal filters let the water run free flow into a big presurised pond bucket before it gets to the exturnal then back into the tank like normal the pond bucket is like one big massive pre filter for the exturnal it works great

but if you have 2 x eturnal its much better to run one at each end of the tank then clean one every 2-3 months the the other then when you clean them you are not doing as much damage to the filtration cycle

that's exactly what I meant I've done and will now do again :good:
