As some of you may know I bought 10 Rummynose last Saturday & after 3 days only 1 remained left, despite a water change, a prime overdose the lot, 9 died, I left it a few days & decided a Nitrite spike killed them off. Feeling sorry for the last Rummynose I bought 6 more from a different shop that I've been in the passed & after 4 days all still remain happy as ever, all eating & all have bright red faces, I done my weekly water change today & have reserved 6 more to pick up tomorrow to bump my school to 13.

Does it help buying fish from your own area (town or city) to try & replicate the water from the tap ?? Does it help further buying slightly older fish (the 9 that died were babies) ?? or is my experience just down to bad luck ??

I wont be buying from the shop ever again (The Abyss, Stockport)

do you know you had a nitrate spike or are you just assuming that you did ? ....

If you bought 10 at one time you might of overstocked the aquarium and not given it time to adjust. I usually buy 3 fish at a time, if they are schooling fish they just have to sit tight for more to be added.

I know I did... As soon as the fish started looking unwell I done a water test for everything... Everything was fine apart from the Nitrite which was 0.05ppm then 0.02ppm after the initial water change, I had never added that amount of fish before so put it down to a spike.

I have kept rummy nose for some time and have been in the process of building up a large school intended to go into a big tank later this year. All of mine were wild caught and most were bought at a smallish size. I have lost very few, I have a dozen in with my altums for over 2 years now. 14 more are parked in the L450 tank and I have had these for many months and they are now almost as big as the 1st batch. The final batch of about 18 I pickd up in March and they are still undergoing Q along with 3 redline barbs,

I have had minimal issues but have had to treat at least one batch with Fludendazole for wasting disease. I lost one because I was lazy and did not initiate the meds soon enough. The rest are fine.

I find them basically to be pretty hardy as long as they don't have to contend with large changes in TDS (basically hardness and alkalinity combined along with the other solids in the water).

I do wish people would stop saying this & just take peoples word for it instead of answering a question with another question... I have a very expensive testing kit & yes it does measure 0.05ppm, it measures anything from 0.02ppm up to 5ppm.

We don't all buy API kits

What test kit do you have. i would say it definatly helps buying fish from your own area asuming u and the lfs use the same water supply. im not suggesting thats what killed your fish though

personally i'd just stick with the same petstore you always go to. that is what i do, when i set up my 55gallon bowfront tank a week ago i bought all my fish from my same LFS ive been going to for years from everything to fish to lizards to my 4 legged furry friends, but they didnt have zebra danio's that i wanted so i went to a different fish store and bought them, next morning all the zebra danio's were deade and all my other fish were perfectly healthy. thankfully the fish store refunded my money but i'll never buy fish there again, and i dont think the water thing matters at least where i live it doesnt. i dont have a fish store in my town the closest is 30 miles away and ive never had an issue buying fish from there and throwing them into the water in my town.

maybe your usual store has similar tap water to you and the new one doesnt?

No need to be so grumpy about it , and anyway , would such a low amount make any differnce anyway .....

I have the JBL master test kit (£110) & I've come to the conclusion that it does help buying fish from your area, I've purchased Otto's & Rummies both supposed sensitive fish from the same local shop & as yet had no problem with them.

i also use that test kit but i never paid for it
