Rules Shops Have About Taking Fish Back?

I asked for 5 females today (black ruby barbs) but got at least 2 males and didn't know that til they were in the tank and coloured up. I want to return them, what are shop rules regarding taking fish back or swapping them?

Just give them a call. They probably will swap them for females.

It really does depend on the store, some will accept returns within 48hours and some don't, stores often have a notice stating they cannot guarantee the sex of specimens. I would give them a ring; they may be kind enough to offer you an exchange or credit note… Worth a try

Okies I just wondered if shops got funny about the possibility of transferring disease etc. (which I have none of but they do use it as an excuse), funny thing is the fish were very muted colours in the shop, but bright red in my tank, at least says I have ideal tank conditions lol

if they were sold to you on the grounds they are females then they were missold so surely you would be entitled to what you paid for! I would talk politly to them on the phone and if they refuse to exchange which I cant see happening then bring up that you asked for females and were given males and being a fish store they should know how to sex fish!

some times store can be nice and forgiving and will help you on the matter at hand,others... not so much.

similar situation rant coming up:

my local petsmart (before i realized bosemanis would not be happy in a 20) was selling "boesemani rainbowsfish" at the high price for 12.99 usd IMO. they were also selling 7.99 turqousie rainbows in the tank next to the other fishe's. these were all dull colored as they were cramped, it bought 2 "bosemani" rainbows and took them home,immedialty they colored up and were in fact turquise rainbows
next day i come back to return them and the manager asks,why you rturn them? i said there notthe fish i paid for.she then asks an employee who wasnt even there when it happened if these fish were in fact boesemanis (i brought pics and by then the fish dulled again because they were in a bag) and the lady says yes?! then the manager turns to me and is like, whatever heres your $. next month, thhe same fish are still labeled boesemani. when we left the store for the final time ever, some one was complainign they were sold the wrong rainbow fish
