I've just noticed he's got little tufty bits hanging off the points of his anal fin, is it cotton wool or velvet? I dunno, never had this before.

I could TRY and get a pic, but it looks like he's got fluffy bits.

What can I do? Yes a water change, but what else? I must say, he's been kinda quiet for a few days but this morning is the first I've seen of the tail problem sad.gif

Probably cotton if its fluffy - I had bought an orange dalmation ages ago, and had developed this problem within a day. He died by the next morning, so lets see if we can help you're little guy.

100% change first off.
What size of tank is he in? I'd suggest lowering the water level to a few inches, so that if he starts to get lethargic and struggle too go up for air, he doesn't have a long way to travel. Make sure he has something to hide in or else he'll be extremely insecure and would stress out more. Make sure you keep the heat up, white spot loves to attack when the victim is open wounded/ill.

I'm not sure if Melafix helps cotton, don't think it does. The stuff I've got is Interpret Anti-Fungal, but I wouldn't put it in until 24 hours after doing the above for him. And only then, put it in if he appears worse. Some Indian Almond Leave extract might be good for it as well, since it has anti bacterial purposes - but again, not sure if this is good for post, pre, or during etc.

Mmm, I've just prepared his next tank [always have spares so they just get moved the once] with 100% dechlorinated warm water, washed his bridge and plant, put some substrate in [I usually don't, thought it might help him] gone to get him and the cotton's almost gone. I wonder if some fluff got into the tank? But the very ends of some of his rays do seem a bit pale and curly. I'll keep my eye on him, but he's very active at the mo.

I'll keep you updated.x

good sign if he is active...let us know how he is in a few days

pmsl I feel really stupid now  I think it was just fluff cos I can't see it at all now

Whew, glad it was nothing! :D
Once one of my Bettas had it, but it turned out to be just some fuzz/dust! :p
