When you say 'take out the tetras', what do you suggest I do with them? I dn't have another tank to put them in, and I don't want to kill them off. I hav had the x-rays for about 2 years!

and also, like I said, it's up to you, they might be your faves.

but having read ellenas suggestion I'd be more tempted with that,don't know a lot about gouramis but they are beautiful fish.

The ammonia is because the filter packed up about a week ago and I only replaced it today. I put the filter media from the old one into a new, working filter and did a 50% water change. I also removed some plants that looked a bit worse for wear.

Filter is a fluval 2 which has always been perfectly adequate till it broke.

All fish appear healthy, although I rarely see Bertie the bristlenose so less sure about him. I caught a flash of tail when I was cleaning so I know he's still in there

in that case, wait a couple of weeks, test the water regularly, just to make sure you have enough bacteria and not toomuch died off beore doing anything.

what do you think of the gouramis?

I did have dwarf gouramis before I got the zebra danios, but although they are beautiful, they all died within a few weeks Don't know what I did wrong. I would happily get them again if I was sure I could get the care right.

Dwarf gouramis can be prone to a disease and don't have great survival rates. I think (please correct me if I'm wrong) that honey gouramis are a different species which don't suffer from the same disease. They are small and peaceful and come in red and yellow colour varieties.

You're right ellena. Completely different species.

Dwarves grow slightly bigger and are more prone to disease due to inbreeding. They come in powder blue, neon, pale gold and red. They're quite agressive to their own kind, so one per 60l is usually best.

Honeys are lovely sweet little things and easily my favourite. Can be kept in pairs/groups. Just be carefuly not to get too many males in a small space. They may be peaceful, but males will be males and will fight for territory. In your tank specifically you could have a male/female pair if you re-jigged your stocking a bit.
