I'm heading out in a few hours to a very large somewhat local fish store, and they have a very nice selection of fish. Some nice gold sevs and they even have electric blue jack dempseys. While I'm there I'm picking up an eheim 2260 canister to couple with my ac 110 on my 105 gallon tank. My 105 gallon is 48"x18"x28" and currently houses an oscar, convict, and firemouth. The plec is currenty out of the tank and in a 20 temporarily(he's small), and will be given away. My question is, do I have room for one more fish? I would like to try another sev(first one bullied my oscar) or maby an electric blue jack.

yeh u should get a sev, jacks are too agressive and the oscar and jack will fight all the time, i currently have, 3 oscars, 1 chocolate cichlid and a green sev.

In what size tank though, I don't want to overstock.

PS: At the store I decided to go with the eheim 2217 and got another ac110. Giving me a total of 2 ac110's and 1 eheim 2217.

Yeah, you just got two go aheads on the sev... If you need more facts about them and space wise...

Not sure if I can supply you with anymore information that says "You will be okay to put a Sev in your tank". And if some reason you are uneasy about purchasing one at the store, ask them about their return policy! Good luck and pick a beaut! :good:

I'm going to put a downer on it - I think a sev would take it to overstocked. They get to 12", and you're pretty fully stocked with what you have as it is. Sorry.

I think he should be perfectly fine. I have never seen a Severum get larger than 5". On both of the sites I posted, they say the max size they can get is 8".

I saw two for sale today - one was 8"+, the other was 10"+ - even at smaller sizes it would be crowding that tank given cichlid aggression and messiness. :good:

Messiness is definately not a problem. He has two AquaClear 110's on a 105G tank. That is enough filtration for a tank over 200G tank fully stocked. I have one AquaClear 110 on my 75G and it is over kill. He only has one Oscar, one Convict, and One Firemouth. There is no doubt in my mind that he could fit a Sev in there. I am not sure how you determine that there will be to much "cichlid aggression". But I have personally kept both Oscars and Sevs together in harmony. Plus like I said before I think if he really wants one (which he probably already has since this topic is nearly 3 days old) it wouldn't hurt to atleast attempt it. And again if he has any uneasy feelings make sure to know about their return policy.

Hey, I was only posting my opinion

As for aggression, I didn't say there would definitely be a problem, it's just that it's well known that pushing stocking limits with aggressive cichlids is a risky idea (with the exception of Africans, whih isn't relevant here). I personally love to see a reasonably stocked cichlid tank rather than as many as physically fit crammed in together. When you think one oscar needs 75g alone, it is technically pushing it to add more to what he's got. I didn't say he shouldn't do it, I said I wouldn't risk it personally. :good:

I'd say the tank was fully stocked already, maybe some dithers but certainly no other big fish.

As for severums only reaching 5", sorry but had a good laugh at that one. My babies are 4" already and they've got at least that again and some to go...8-10" is average, but 12" is certainly possible. Even if they only got to 8" there wouldn't be much room for them in there. Oscars need 75g to themselves, and with a firemouth and a convict, I'd say maybe one small cichlid such as another firemouth would be the absolute max, but with all those cichlids in there some dithers would be wiser and much more interesting :)

What dithers would you recommend? I don't want any bottem feeders as these fish don't let anything get to the bottem lol. Silver Dollars maby? Are there any other dither fish that would be alright in this tank? I hears silvers dollars are mostly vegetarians, is that true?

Silver dollars are beautiful, and many folks have them as dithers. I had them in with my oscar, convicts and intermedium, and they really made the tank look spesh, but one problem I had was they were a bit frenzied at feeding time, and scared off my oscar (he was exceptionally cowardly lol). I dont think I've heard of anyone else having that problem though so it might just have been me/mine.
